The Opera House
In 1859 Shepard Cary built a large store on Court street. When asked what the building would cost Shepard replied, “I do not know, my aim is to build a good building regardless of the investment”.
It was used by Shepard Cary until 1866 as a grocery store with a large Opera house over the store. He sold more than groceries however, he sold furniture, glassware, stoves and much more.
The Opera House was the place to go in the 1800’s for entertainment, concerts, plays, and minstrel shows appeared on its stage.
The building continues to stand today although it has been remodeled many times and is currently known as Heywood Apartments.
